Our Roots: In 1992 we bought our home on 5 acres in Canterbury. Our passive solar house was surrounded by pines and hardwood trees amongst outcroppings of beautiful granite ledge. There was very little open space for gardens. In 2000, we purchased an adjoining 3 acres which gave us all kinds of new opportunities. An area behind the house was logged and opened up for gardens. We started with a blank slate, an open space of land, and little by little created a beautiful landscape. Our children were quite young at the time so we started with the Children's Garden which features plants representing the 5 senses of the body. The Peter Rabbit Garden vegetable beds were established next, and we built two teepees for our kids, on which to grow gourds and morning glories. Since then, we've added 2-3 themed gardens each year. In 2010 we opened our gardens to the public.
In 2012 we became certified by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom. We are one of 6 in New Hampshire and the only one open to the public. We incorporated natural learning areas in and amongst our gardens to enhance the experience for children who come to Petals in the Pines. The same year we had a farm stand custom built by Prison Industries in Concord, NH. They built the stand at the prison and then delivered it and installed it on site. The enclosed portion is used as a workshop area for creating leaf stones and floral designs; the porch is open as a self-service sales area.
A 20'x20' pavilion was built in 2013 to create an education center and provide a roof over our head for any inclement weather. It's also home to our "Indian Paintbrush Nature Art Area" and where we hold our birthday party celebrations and other social gatherings.
We've hosted elementary school groups, 4H clubs, garden clubs, families for birthday celebrations and thousands of individuals who have attended our public events and workshops. In 2015 we were chosen as Best Outdoor Classroom by New Hampshire Magazine.
